Rune prototype

So finally I can show you the Rune with it all nicely painted. The paint color isn't actually a color we'll be doing but for speed we decided just to paint it white and black for the rear triangle. The team color will actually be hand polished where all the white parts are and the rear triangle will be all hand polished as well... should look really slick.
Other colors will be anodized gold, anodized black with a polished ano gold lower link, and an all white powder coated one. I think there will be something to fit everyones style.

More importantly is the techy type stuff with this bike, which we've written about in earlier posts but its ok to go over it again.
The bike will be 6" of travel, have a 1.5" headtube, custom proprietary hydroformed tubesets which are not shown on the prototype and will incorporate all the gussets right into their form, the VF4B suspension with on the fly greaseable pivots [that's of course if you bring the grease with you], and I'm too lazy to go into detail on leverage ratios, rising rates blah blah blah... click the label on the sidebar that says "Rune" grab a coffee and get ready to do a bunch of reading if you so desire.

All you're hear for is the pictures anyway :P

Oh also got the weight on this frame which is a large. Without shock we're looking at 3105 grams and that includes the seatcollar [-55g w/o seatcollar] so the conversion is 1lb=.0022... so we're looking at the large in lbs at 6.8 which is pretty awesome... I couldn't find the weight on a Nomad, if you know it can you post it up in the comments section, that would be much appreciated. Oh and it should get lighter with the new tubeset so I can imagine the large coming in at around 6.5lbs for the large.
We'll get one to Jason at Sicklines so he can verify that the weight has not been embellished and is exactly as stated. Those guy do such thorough reviews that its kinda scary to send them a bike because they will cut you down if you've messed something up, and since they take the bike completely apart theres no place to hide anything.

Pricing is going to be about 2000 Cdn/1900USD with a DHXAir. If you were to look at pricing without a shock it would be around 1600/1500. If you really want to know what the dealers would sell it for you can check out the current prices on the Pyre. The Rune should be on par with that bike as my costs are about the same to produce them.

I have to say overall I'm super pleased at how this bike turned out its got so much cool stuff packed in it I don't think there's a single feature that we've overlooked. Keith of course will be playing with the best cable routing when he gets it and I think he said he'll probably be sending it at Whistler although thats not its intended purpose, its just good if we abuse the crap out of it to make sure that its solid. We do know however that it's lighter cousin the Pyre is super strong after it under went testing at Durham Universities engineering facility, and the tubeset on this bike is fatter and heavier and the math behind it shows that it will be plenty strong.

The world can be a funny place sometimes - consider this. Our Alberta rep Scott Currie was making his rounds and went by to talk to Sid at River Valley Cycles in AB and if he doesn't find Dave with the Vegvisir inked on his calf. Scott says he just got it about 3 weeks ago and had no idea the Rune was also earmarked to get this as its icon .

Again let me know what you think, if theres any suggestions you have let me or Keith know as we can still make changes if there's something you'd like to see us do on the bike. I was thinking of a beer tap just behind the seatpost but we haven't figure out the refrigeration thing yet and I'm not crazy about warm beer - its in the works tho!!!

Sick!!
my garage will be to small to fit all new banshee bike...

guillaume said...

the santa cruz nomad frame is 3286g for a large with DHX Air and QR seat post but with polished paint
for a painted frame should be few hundred gramms more.

Jay MacNeil said...

thanks guillaume.
Looks like the DHXAir is 435g so it looks like once we get our new tubes on there we'll need to weigh it again but I think one could safely say they are pretty much the same weight and only a few grams will seperate them - I'm happy with that.

Hi frame looks light clean and high tech , only bad part for me that looks chip are two short curved pipes in rear triangle ,square shape maybe but i can be wrong

been reading all the stuff on the blog and i have to say the new bikes are SWEET.

why not run full cable housing for rune? that way we wont have to worry about the cables getting dirty and grimy as the riding conditions here in malaysia are unpredictable. sunny and dry can be muddy and wet the next.

just a suggestion.
keep up the good work guys.
i myself am already planning on ordering one once they are in production.

cheers

It's a great bike,2008 will be the revolution year for Banshee.

Full cable housing is a great idea. Someone mentioned running cables through the shock mount on the down tube on the Rampant, that sounds like a good idea too, nice slick cabling! I really like the overall look of the frame, the Nomad doesn't do it for me at all. I love the amount of information on the site too, graphs etc plus explaining things in layman's language. Good work fellas.

Keith Scott said...

I will set up the Rune and Rampant to run with full cable housing, and possibly the pyre too... the simplicity of setting it up and the resistance to grit etc more than beats the slight weight saving in my opinion.

yeah I have worked out how I am going to redesign the shock mounts on the rune and rampant already to fit cables inside them, and they will look better too!

thansk for all this feedback guys! We want to get a reoutation as the riders company, myself and Jay are riders, and we think we know what you guys want... but the more feedback you give us, the better we can cater to your needs!

Thanks,
Keith

Gold ano...Blingy I gotta see that

I think being able to shred Whistler is a really important part of a true Do-It-All bike. It's obviously not a hucker, but most riders just want to go fast, hit small doubles and have a ton of fun. then ride locally the next day

with the cable routing solved by routing it through the shock mount it's going to looks so clean!

The only problem I can see is that no one is riding it yet :P

Looking good.

It looks like its 73mm/135mm? Any debating on 83mm/150mm (Stronger dishless rear wheel, little stiffer, etc)

Jason

Keith Scott said...

no point going 150mm OLD on the rune, that would add weight and is unnecessary, it will be stiffer than all the competition I am sure!

Sick said...

Excellent, 12mm axle? or 10mm?

Jay MacNeil said...

Sick, it will be a 10mm. If you need the extra strength the you can go with the 10mm solid axle rather then a the standard hollow axle QR type. I know we'll be specing this type in some of our buildkits. I took all this into consideration and felt that the riders of yesterday used to do some crazy stuff on 9mm front axles and 10mm rears, and since this bike is an Enduro a 150 or 12mm would just push this bike more into the freeride then the Enduro side. It will be plenty strong.
I envision most guys/gals riding this bike NOT with full face helmets and a ton of pads although that can be a personal choice. If you want to see where it fits category wise compare it with the Nomad.

Sick said...

Sounds good. I know the new Bullit comes with options for a 150mm axle/12mm so I was curious how this would compare.

Karupshun said...

Jay, have you seen what people are doing to their Nomad's? It's insane! Short of casing the hell out of every landing, they gobble up what most bike parks have to offer.

be prepared to see a lot of people in leg armor, full faces, and huge smiles ripping DH

Jay MacNeil said...

Bike parks are pretty good for having totally dialed transitions so thats why I'm not to worried about that but I would suggest that they be used on occasion for that and not make it your 1 choice for your park bike for the year. It really depends on how good or smooth a rider you are... I can't dictate what people will use it for just use your common sense... if your 6'4" and 220 there probably is a better bike for you to use at Whistler if you plan on hitting freight train, the crab apple hits or airing out the Aline or GLC rock drops.

I agree with the comment about the two little round tubes (not sure what their called) that connect the Seat stays to the Chain stays. They do not look right. I know that looks, do not make a great bike, but I believe it would look sooo much better if they were somehow square or something else. I am strongly considering this bike, but if this was fixed, I would for sure get it. As it is now, it just throws the rest of the bike off aesthetically which is too bad becasue the rest of the bike is beautiful and awesome. For whatever it is worth, this is my biggest complaint about the Pyre also.

Guillaume said...

I already heard this comment about these 2 tubes
For me it's not a big issue but I m agree if it's more square the bike will look more agressive !
anyway rightnow we have seen the bike full setted up then wait and see It can probably be ok ...

Jay MacNeil said...

Actually its almost near impossible to bend them because its a 3D bend. We did do one in square but it crimped wherever we bent the tube and it looked super weird and the round looked so much better compared to the square.
If you get a chance to see the bike in real life maybe you'll see it in a different light but you'll need to trust me on the fact that the square looked pretty bad.

Karupshun said...

could you custom draw, or hydroform a square tube

I like the curvy tubes personally, but I can see it being a point for some

Marcel Balog said...

Why not a flat metal sheet? it could link the parts you want and I think the square tubes can handle the flex without that tubes reinforcing them.
I saw something like that in a McMahon (or something like this) all mountain bike, it´s a shame I can´t find a picture to post here.

Psycho Mike said...

I must say that the Rune is looking dang sweet.

I'm well and truly a Clydesdale and want something that can handle my aggressive riding and still go on all day epics. This new design is looking like it will fit the bill. Nomads and 6.6's are on my short list, but I think the Rune will have a spot on there too...just gotta see one in person to be sure.

Any plans for a medium blue color scheme? I prefer blue because if I eat dirt and the bike goes flying, it is easier to find the bike in the brush. (Blue is not a common color in nature). Not that I eat a lot of dirt....but I do ride aggressively, so I expect to have unscheduled dismounts from time to time.

Like you said, Jay: No, I wouldn't expect this bike to take my 6' 235+ lb butt down Whistler...but anything in Edmonton looks like it'd be fair game.

Also, as for the curvy tubes of the rear triangle: they aren't too bad on the built up bike. My suggestion would be to try to get them to match the curve of the back wheel...then when the bike is built, they will all but vanish into the flow of the wheel.

Jay MacNeil said...

It'd be fine for you... Dalen at Tridents about the same weight 235 and he's been taking it on some crazy shore rides. I suspect the shore has eaten more bikes then whistler due to the drops to flat and the lack of any run outs.
The colors will be white, gold, black , and Team [black and polished]
Also we're not being boring either with the colors... for example the black will be ano'd but also come with a polished gold lower link, rockers, and gold decals... but it won't be an orangy gold but more a sandy brown gold. It will scream bling bling bling. Not for everyone of course but thats why we're having some very unique styles that will fit many tastes.
It was really fun this year because I basically said "screw it" there are no rules and we can do whatever the heck we want so lets go crazy and get creative.

Anonymous said...

Hello,
Is 67 deg HA a little slack for an Enduro? Also, Why choose the 1.5 headtube if it's not meant for the Shore or people with pads? Is fork stiffness really an issue. Why not use a ZeroStack headset?
Just curious?

Psycho Mike said...

Hey Jay,

Cool beans with the colors....I get where you're coming from. Is the white getting the same treatment as the black with the gold linkage, rockers etc?

Keep us posted, man....I seriously want to have a close look at a Rune built up.

ardi said...

what size will fit me if I have 29" (74cm) inseam?

Keith Scott said...

Ardi, I would suggest buying a small frame, as a medium would be cutting it a bit close.

Nice looking bike, great specs and its geat you take the time to ask for input from the public. When will the frames aviliable and can you post the Pics of the frame color choices when avaliable? Also are the geometry/specs that are posted here correct or are the production versions different!

Thanks! Please keep us informed on the progress!

Keith Scott said...

The frames are in production right now and will be shipped to distributers asap... can't give exact dates as delays always tend to happen in shipping, but we are trying our best to get them out quickly to keep our customers happy.

as for colours there will be a few options including the one pictured above, the other options will be anodized.

as for specs, Jay has been working very hard to get the best possible kits for your buck, there will be several options to suit all budgets.
